Duke Energy has completed a landmark transformation of the Catawba River in Great Falls, South Carolina, creating two distinct whitewater channels that are drawing outdoor enthusiasts from across the region. The Long Bypass channel stretches over two miles and features Class II and III rapids, while the Short Bypass offers more challenging Class III and IV rapids for experienced paddlers. The Nitrolee Access Area, with its 100-space parking lot, restroom facilities, and interpretive center highlighting the area's industrial heritage, serves as the primary gateway to the whitewater experience.
The Great Falls Recreation Flow Release Project is part of Duke Energy's comprehensive Catawba-Wateree relicensing agreement, which mandates the creation of recreational amenities along the river system. Since the license was issued, Duke Energy has invested tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure, public access points, and environmental restoration. The scheduled water releases on weekends create a predictable and thrilling whitewater experience that has already attracted visitors from Columbia and Charlotte, as well as paddlers from as far away as Colorado.
Beyond the whitewater, the project is catalyzing broader economic development in Great Falls. Plans for a new state park, connections to the Carolina Thread Trail, and the renovation of historic downtown buildings into visitor centers and retail spaces are all moving forward. Local businesses like the Dearborn Wine and Tap have already seen increased patronage, and community organizations are working to ensure that development benefits all residents through inclusive planning processes.
